From Able to Remarkable
What makes remarkable students remarkable? Attributes such as resilience, creativity, curiosity and intelligence may come to mind, and we might also add others such as intuition and tenacity – perhaps the very qualities enshrined on a school’s website as characterising their student body.
But what has made them what they are? Were they born this way, or did their ‘remarkabilities’ emerge at primary school? What has school really done to help generate excellence in learning among these students? Such questions may make teachers feel uneasy, prompting them to reflect on the sometimes limiting scope of what is often labelled as ‘able and talented provision’ in their school.
I argue that these remarkabilities are there, latent and dormant, in many more students than we might at first acknowledge. In From Able to Remarkable I share a rich variety of cross-curricular strategies and techniques designed to help teachers unearth these capabilities and signpost a route to the top for every learner on their individual learning journey.
